LAS VEGAS–After rising tensions between the two media titans, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg nearly came to blows in a confrontation of epic proportions this week. Only the influence of their respective mothers turned the would-be-opponents from sworn enemies to lifelong friends in an instant.
Zuckerberg, founder and inventor of social media, met with Musk, president and CEO of the internet, in Las Vegas on Wednesday for a no-holds-barred, last-man-standing UFC fight. With both men in full fighting gear, Zuckerberg lunged to throw a punch at Musk. However, when Musk pleaded, “Save Maye,” Zuckerberg was taken aback and stopped, crying out, “Why did you say that name?!?”
Commentators have noted that Musk’s comment was a reference to his mother, Maye Musk. Musk later explained that his mother would have been extremely disappointed in her son for engaging in a public fistfight and that he wanted to save her from such shame.
Zuckerberg has addressed some public speculation about his reaction. “People asked if Maye was coincidentally my mom’s name too. And it’s not–my mom’s name is Karen.” Sources indicate that, like Maye Musk, Karen Zuckerberg also disapproved of her son fighting and asked to speak with the UFC’s manager.
“I didn’t know who Maye was,” Zuckerberg continued. “I asked ‘Why did you say that name?’ because I literally had no idea what he was talking about.”
However, some observers saw the superhero Spider-Man passing by at the moment and described him bursting into uncontrollable sobs as soon as Musk said “Save Maye.”
In the aftermath of the episode, Musk and Zuckerberg have become close friends, united by their mutual love and respect for their mothers. Musk has even voiced uncertainty and regret as to why they were planning to fight in the first place. Some sources speculate that business giant Lex Luthor may have conspired to create enmity between the two. However, Zuckerberg has denied any connection to Luthor.

At publishing time, Musk and Zuckerberg were planning to start a team together, though they differed on whether to call it “The Musktice League” or “The Zuckstice League.” This sharp disagreement may again lead them to blows.
