The Rings of Power season two finale gave us answers to a lot of important questions. Like, “Is that guy who was obviously Gandalf actually Gandalf?” And “Do balrogs have wings?” But it still didn’t reveal the identity of the mysterious character known only as the Dark Wizard–and not knowing has filled us with a great sorrow, man.
But not to worry! Our lore experts have come up with several plausible theories about the character’s identity. If you don’t want to wait until season three comes out in another two to four years, then check out our list below!
6. Grigori Rasputin. Wasn’t Rasputin also a dark wizard in his own right? Plus, they have the same beard.

5. Alan Moore. You’ve got to admit, there’s an uncanny resemblance with the wizard/comic book writer of titles like Watchmen and V for Vendetta. Is it possible we’ll see the Dark Wizard’s forces donning masks and fighting for anarchy in Middle-Earth? Will the villain’s vile vassals violently vex the valiant and vanquish their victims?

4. Steppenwolf. Yes, it seems Darkseid’s minion and the Justice League villain may have taken a Boom Tube to Middle-Earth. But with such a dull villain coming out of such a forgettable movie, he’ll fit right in with Rings of Power‘s hobbit storylines.

3. Rubeus Hagrid. Another famous wizard from Tolkien’s lore (or something like that–it’s all the same, right?).
Hey, at least we didn’t say Kingsley Shacklebolt was the dark wizard. I’m not sure if we could get away with that one!

2. Celeborn. He’s been missing and presumed dead for these first two seasons, so as the world of movies has taught us, it only makes sense that his apparent demise would be followed by him coming back as a villain. Besides, you’d turn evil too if your real name was Teleporno.

- Count Dooku. Yes, that’s right–our best theory is that the Dark Wizard is actually an elderly but esteemed magic user, who was previously good but turned evil, and was played by Christopher Lee in an early 2000s film trilogy. Who else could it possibly be?

Who do you think the Dark Wizard is?
