BURBANK, CA–Marvel Studios has announced the newest MCU project to brighten up everyone’s holiday season. The Punisher Holiday Special is coming soon to DisneyPlus.

Jon Bernthal will reprise his acclaimed role as Frank Castle/the Punisher from his own series, which ran from 2017 to 2019. This hour-long special will see the death-dealing vigilante face off against a new foe: Santa Claus himself (Vincent D’Onofrio)! When Frank realizes that Santa has been breaking and entering into people’s homes, he vows to make Santa pay for his crimes. But once they discover they’re on the same team, Santa instead recruits the Punisher to deliver coal to everyone on the naughty list–with a side of bullets!

Frank’s quest for retribution will have him gunning down several new foes–including the Grinch (guilty of theft on a grand scale), a pair of smalltime bandits named Harry and Marv, and a whole group of outlaws who kidnapped celebrity Kevin Bacon. Along the way, Frank will be visited by the ghosts of three prominent mobsters he’s killed, who help him to rediscover the true meaning of Christmas.

To wage his war against these crooks, this special will see Frank adding a few new weapons to his arsenal. He’ll use a bomb that releases tear gas–which he calls his Frank-incense–along with a short-range rocket launcher, nicknamed “the Missile-toe.”

Some fans have questioned the seemingly odd juxtaposition of having a Christmas special focused on a dark, violent character such as the Punisher. But as one viewer, Cindy L. Hu, astutely pointed out, “The holiday special goes to the soul at Christmas who needs it the most. And I think that soul is the Punisher.” The creators of Batman Returns, Batman: Noel, and “Christmas with the Joker” were unavailable for comment.

The highly anticipated special will also contain a scene where Frank recounts in specific detail the events of Daredevil season 2 and both seasons of The Punisher, thereby confirming once and for all that they’re part of the MCU canon.
