NEW YORK–It truly is the age in which every superhero is getting their 15 minutes of fame. Warner Bros. announced this week that a Super Grover reboot film is in development, with Frank Oz returning to voice the iconic muppet crusader.

Sources described the reboot as a “darker, grittier” take on the lovable muppet Grover and his crimefighting alter ego. Slated for a late 2027 release, the film will be titled Super Grover: The Monster at the End of This Movie. The tortured, brooding Super Grover seeks to combat a looming threat–the titular monster at the end–before realizing at the film’s climax that the monster in the movie is none other than himself, forcing him to confront his own dark side and inner demons.

Studio executives hope that Super Grover could become a launching point for a whole new line of darker, grittier takes on classic Sesame Street characters.

“Much potential I sense in a Super Grover reboot,” Oz told Marvelous Movies reporters in an interview. “Excited, I am, to voice this character again.” Nonetheless, the 81-year-old actor did voice some concerns about the film’s tone and direction, saying that a tortured, conflicted character could be on a path to the dark side.

The announcement follows Netflix’s planned purchase of Warner Bros., which includes HBO Max, current owner of the Sesame Street franchise. Zack Snyder has been brought on to direct, with a screenplay written by Joss Whedon.

Super Grover hits theaters in 2027. Zack Snyder’s Super Grover will be released exclusively on streaming in 2031.
