NEW YORK–Good news is in store for Walking Dead fans. AMC has brought in a new creative mind, Dan Harmon, to oversee the upcoming Rick and Michonne spin-off. Harmon is best known for his work on Community and other comedic shows.

Harmon has stated that the series will be a departure from the rest of the Walking Dead franchise up to this point. He’s reimagined Rick as an older, disgruntled scientist, with Michonne as his young, unintelligent protégé. This portrayal will actually be considered an alternate universe from the main Walking Dead continuity, which Rick can access through an alternate universe portal gun. The zombies in this universe will be mutant praying mantises who are all in love with Michonne.

Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira have both exited the project, as Justin Roiland will now portray the live action roles of both Rick and Michonne. “I see no problem with changing Michonne from a strong woman to a dumb kid, or with me, a white man, playing a black woman,” Roiland said in an interview. “I’m sure the fans will understand that it’s all in good fun. What’s the worst that could happen?”

Additionally, Walking Dead alums Cooper Andrews and Emily Kinney will return for the roles of Jerry and Beth, respectively.

The series is expected to feature an episode where Rick escapes an oncoming zombie horde by scientifically transforming himself into a pickle.

Rick and Michonne is scheduled to premiere on AMC in 2024. At publishing time, however, Justin Roiland had been fired from the project following sexual assault allegations. These developments may delay the show’s release.
