NEW YORK–Marvel has announced a bold new move for comics readers, particularly fans of Daredevil. To celebrate the blind crimefighter with superhuman radar senses, Marvel is releasing a line of Daredevil comics entirely in Braille.
“This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and definitely isn’t just another cash grab to pander to wokeness and inclusivity,” said Marvel Comics Editor in Chief C. B. Cebulski in a press release. “Blind comics readers are a criminally underrepresented demographic. But now they’ll be able to read and enjoy the story too.”
“Matt Murdock is someone who’s really been marginalized his whole life,” Cebulski continued. “Not only is he blind, but he’s also a redhead. And a lawyer–though that one is probably his own fault. Anyway, we really think our fans of different backgrounds, abilities, and hair colors, will be able to relate to him a lot better now.”
“So, the text will obviously be in Braille,” Cebulski answered when asked how exactly a blind person could possibly read a comic book. “As for the pictures, we’ll just have those done in raised lines too so someone can feel each line of the picture. Trust me, it’ll work.” Legendary writer/artist team Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada, known for their fan-favorite Daredevil storyline “Guardian Devil,” will be returning as creators for this series. But due to the higher cost and greater effort of producing a Braille comic book, each issue will be priced at $49.99. “It would have been more, but at least we didn’t have to pay a colorist this time,” Cebulski said.
Marvel representatives also confirmed that they were working on a similar sign language comic series for Echo, a Deaf superheroine and sometime ally of Daredevil. “That one’s gonna be tricky too, because most of the drawings will just be characters doing hand signals instead of word balloons,” Cebulski explained.
This move comes months ahead of the highly anticipated streaming series Daredevil: Born Again, and the idea seems to be catching on already. “What they’re doing with the comics is a great idea,” said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. “Now, we’re gonna release each episode of Daredevil in Braille as well.” When asked how it was possible to have a television episode presented in Braille, Feige declined to comment.
Daredevil: The Braille Adventures hit comics stands in January. Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on DisneyPlus in March.
