SEATTLE–Amazon Prime Video has announced its next new original series: The Marvelous Ms. Marvel, based on the Marvel character of the same name.

Following Ms. Marvel’s recent death in the comics, Jeff Bezos approached Kevin Feige about buying the rights to continue the heroine’s story. The new series will resurrect the titular Kamala Khan and offer a fresh take on the character. The Marvelous Ms. Marvel will reimagine Kamala Khan as a Jewish Muslim woman living in Pakistan in the 1950s, fighting for women’s empowerment by becoming a standup comedienne, while also maintaining a dual identity in which she fights crime as Ms. Marvel.

“I don’t know about this,” said longtime fan Adrian Wacker. Don’t you think it’s a bit of a stretch?”

Still, overall fan anticipation for the show is high. “I’m really excited for the new direction,” said longtime Marvel fan Jamie Alphona. “If She-Hulk taught us anything, it’s that comedy and female superheroes make for a perfect combo! I’m sure everyone will love this show just as much.”

TV critic Steven McKelvie agreed, stating, “Amazon Video has also done excellent work with every property it’s adapted so far, and is universally praised for its prominent use of woman and minority characters.”

The Marvelous Ms. Marvel will release on Prime Video this summer, leading into Kamala’s appearance in The Marvels in November.
