USA–Amid declining popularity after several underperforming movies, Marvel is now facing additional backlash too. Fans are decrying and canceling Marvel for introducing a character named Binary at the end of The Marvels.
November’s blockbuster hit The Marvels contained a post-credits scene in which Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) wakes up in the X-Men universe after traveling through a hole in the fabric of spacetime. There she meets a multiversal variant of her mother Maria (Lashana Lynch), who in this universe goes by the codename “Binary.” It remains unclear what mutant powers Binary has aside from being a clear symbol of cisgender oppression.
“Marvel has more than enough binary characters already,” said longtime fan Leigh Brarson of Los Angeles. “She should have been called Non-Binary instead. This is clearly just another move by Marvel to reinforce the straight, white, cisgender patriarchy.”
“I was really hoping instead for a character who would replace all the white, male symbols of the oppressive patriarchy,” Brarson continued. Lynch is a black woman who is perhaps best known for playing Agent 007 in the most recent James Bond movie.
Recently, angry fans such as Brarson formed a mob, seeking to Lynch Kevin Feige along with the offending actress in question. In response, Disney has released a “corrected” version of The Marvels, changing the character’s name to “Non-Binary” instead. Tens of fans nationwide have gone to see the re-release in theaters, which has nearly doubled the film’s overall revenue.
At publishing time, Marvel was announcing their next new hero to make it to the big screen: a lesser-known comic book character called Cisgender Heteronormative Man. Fans would likely be up in arms, except that the MCU seems to have no fans left.
