BURBANK, CA–Move over, Brie Larson! In a joint collaborative effort between Marvel and DC, studio executives have confirmed that Zachary Levi will be joining the cast of The Marvels. As the original character to use the name “Captain Marvel,” Shazam (played by Levi) will be a natural addition to the storyline.
“To be honest, after Black Adam and Shazam 2, this franchise really hasn’t been doing so hot,” admitted James Gunn, new head of DC Films. “So we had no problem lending Shazam to Marvel for at least one movie. Honestly, DC could use the cash!”
“I know this is supposed to be a movie about girl power and women’s empowerment,” said Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige. “But I thought it was missing one thing: a heteronormative white male in a leading role to steal some of the thunder from the leading ladies. After all, it’s been a while since we had one of those in a superhero movie.”
The film is expected to feature Shazam swooping in at just the right moment to save the three title heroines from distress. Shazam–a teenage boy in a grown man’s body–will likely also ogle, admire, and try to hit on Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, much like he did to Wonder Woman in Shazam: Fury of the Gods. “But it’s still empowering and feminist, because he’s attracted to strong women,” Levi stated. “That’s how that works, right?”
Not all of Levi’s costars are so enthusiastic, though. “Adding Shazam is a clear attempt by the patriarchy to undermine the strong leading women of this movie,” said Larson, who plays the role of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. “I’m going to be speaking to Marvel’s manager about this.”
When asked for a comment, lead actress Iman Vellani, who plays the role of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, couldn’t stop screaming excitedly about getting to meet Zachary Levi.
The Marvels hits theaters in November.
