BURBANK, CA–Just weeks ahead of the movie’s release, new stills from the highly anticipated Fantastic Four: First Steps reveal a surprising new detail. Sue Storm, a.k.a. Invisible Woman (portrayed by Vanessa Kirby) will sport a blond mustache in the film.
The news comes on the heels of fan complaints about Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of a mustachioed Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, along with a bearded Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Longtime Marvel fans are protesting that none of these characters have traditionally been depicted with facial hair in the comics. Others, though, share a different perspective.
“The mustache is a symbol that we’re taking these characters, especially Sue, in a new direction,” explained director Matt Shakman in an interview. “Although careful fans of Marvel lore might recognize that it’s not that new. Jessica Alba also wore a mustache when she played Sue–but you just can’t tell because she kept it invisible the whole time.” In response to Shakman pointing out this detail, the hashtag #ReleaseTheMustacheCut has begun trending on social media in regard to Tim Story’s Fantastic Four movies from 2005 and 2007.
“At first I wasn’t sure about having a mustache,” Kirby admitted in a press conference when asked about the controversial choice. “But then it grew on me.”
Fans have also pointed out that First Steps appears to take place on a ‘parallel Earth’ from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as evidenced by other lore changes such as a female Silver Surfer. And apparently, this universe is one where many more characters than usual sport fashionable facial hair. Recently released set photos have also revealed Galactus and baby Franklin Richards having mustaches. It’s even suspected that antagonist Doctor Doom may have a neatly trimmed black mustache and goatee under his mask.
Other prominent Marvel characters expected to cameo in this film include Doctor Strange, J. Jonah Jameson, and Dum Dum Dugan. Notably absent from this list will be President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford), who was allegedly told “to lose the mustache or lose the election.”

The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25.
