Today we review the latest MCU installment that you really should go see if you haven’t yet! With a stellar cast and a truly epic story, Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, and Robert Pattinson as Batman.

The movie opens with Jason Bourne (Damon) washing up on a beach, having no memory of who he is or where he comes from. It turns out that a sorceress named Clea (Charlize Theron) has been keeping him captive for seven years in a dream, where time passes much more quickly than in the conscious world. The only thing he has to tether him back to the reality is his unique totem, a small statue of the goddess MJ (Zendaya). Bourne must remember who he is, break himself away from the woman trying to keep him trapped in the dream, and return home to his family.

While trapped in the dream, Bourne begins to remember the events that have led him there. Bourne, a former member of the United States Army Delta Force, was selected for a CIA black ops program to infiltrate enemy territory in the city of Troy. Kitty Pryde of the X-Men (Elliot Page) uses his phasing powers to get Bourne and his men past the walls of Troy, but is tragically killed in the process. However, Bourne and his men conquer Troy and win the war.

In flashbacks, Bourne recalls the misadventures that have befallen him while they were Far From Home after the war. Some of the men die during a great battle against Cyclops (James Marsden). They later have a run-in with Alpha (Samantha Morton) and her horde of Whisperers who wear the skins of zombies to blend in. Among the undead zombies who come back to life is a prophet named Peter Gambi (James Remar), who warns Bourne of his coming fate. Sure enough, when all his men eventually perish, a guilt-ridden Bourne seeking escape is lured into Clea’s dream state.

Meanwhile, back home, Bourne’s wife Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and his son Spider-Man faithfully await his return. Only a few still remain loyal to Odysseus, including his family and a servant named Gor Koresh (John Leguizamo), the real cyclops of the story!

Catwoman’s house is plagued by suitors who want to marry her–most notably Batman, who keeps asking her if she wants to know his secret identity. Catwoman and Spider-Man try to fend off the suitors, almost leading to the Batman vs. Spider-Man conflict that’s been foreshadowed in recent months of the MCU. However, Peter Parker doesn’t actually use his spider powers in this film, since no one remembers that he’s Spider-Man and he doesn’t want to reveal his secret.

Peter, of course, is still pining after MJ, who he and Bourne both worship as a goddess. Bourne’s quest is guided by visions of MJ, and even Peter keeps saying he sees MJ’s wise eyes in other people. Guided by his mentor Beta (Ryan Hurst), who is secretly Alpha’s right-hand man among the Whisperers, Peter sets out to seek news of his father’s return. He goes to see the Punisher (Jon Bernthal), an old army buddy of Bourne’s. Punisher is now married to Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), the most beautiful woman in the world, who the war was actually fought over. But despite the fact that THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!!, Punisher is ultimately unable to help Peter find his father. It seems Bourne may truly have No Way Home!

(Fun bit of behind-the-scenes trivia: the inclusion of Alpha and Beta in this movie is a subtle nod to the fact that this story takes place in ancient Greece!)

In flashbacks, Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie), who was one of Bourne’s strongest soldiers, is married to Nakia’s twin sister, Maz Kanata (also played by Nyong’o). But then she kills him as revenge for sacrificing their young daughter (probably to gain the Soul Stone or something)! However, Bowser Jr. survives and returns in skeleton form (just like his father did in this spring’s Super Mario Galaxy).

Flashbacks also reveal that it was Catwoman who first gave Bourne his totem, the small statue of MJ. Remembering his forgotten family, he is able to escape Clea’s dream world and return to reality. However, the totem is still spinning in the final scene, leaving room for the possibility that all this could still be a dream! Will Bourne be able to return home, fight off Batman and the suitors, reunite with Catwoman and Spidey, and finally return to the life he left behind for a Brand New Day?
