SAN DIEGO–Last weekend’s San Diego Comic Con held a number of surprising announcements for Marvel fans–most notably the reveal of Robert Downey, Jr. in the villainous role of Doctor Doom. But RDJ isn’t the only big-name Marvel actor who’s returning. Other panels revealed that Chris Evans has been cast as Kang the Conqueror, along with Scarlett Johansson as Galactus, devourer of worlds.

Downey previously portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from 2008 to 2019. His casting as Doctor Doom is only the first in a series of attempts to revitalize the Doomed MCU by recasting dead, iconic heroes as villains. Fans have been divided on whether or not this is a wise move for Marvel, but what seems clear is that RDJ will emerge the Victor.

“The MCU just hasn’t been the same since Endgame,” Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige announced on Saturday. “Sure, we gave all these characters an emotional, heroic sendoff in 2019, but it turns out fans don’t want to watch anymore after we killed off their favorite heroes. So, instead of boldly embracing the new creative direction and focusing on other actors and characters, we just caved to the pressure and brought everyone back!”

“Now the MCU is much truer to the comics,” Feige continued. “Every superhero has died a tragic, heart-wrenching death at least once, but they always come back in some gimmicky, utterly ridiculous way that makes the original death meaningless.”

Feige explained that, during the many years Steve Rogers (Captain America) was traveling through the timestream in Endgame, he perfected time travel technology and became the true Kang the Conqueror. Evans, who portrayed Rogers from 2011 to 2019, will replace Jonathan Majors, who had been cast as Kang before being fired over legal troubles. Fans are already raising concerns of whitewashing, especially since Evans’s portrayal as the Human Torch in Deadpool and Wolverine also replaced Michael B. Jordan’s critically acclaimed portrayal of the same character from 2015.

Similarly, following Natasha Romanoff’s (Black Widow’s) sacrificial death on Vormir, Feige explained that the Power Cosmic possessed her and is bringing her back to life as Galactus. Since the upcoming Fantastic Four movie already features a female version of the Silver Surfer, Feige said it was only logical to include a female Galactus too. Nonetheless, fans aren’t convinced, since the New York-born Johansson isn’t a true Taa-an like Galactus–and also because everyone knows that cosmic-powered space aliens can’t be girls.

“Bringing back dead heroes as villains is actually something we’ve been trying for a while across Marvel and Disney,” Feige assured audiences. “Remember, Quicksilver is playing Kraven the Hunter. And…uh…remember when, a month after his death, Vision became Dryden Vos?” Several audience members scratched their heads or expressed confusion, having intentionally forgotten about Solo: A Star Wars Story and the upcoming Kraven film.

Johansson will appear as Galactus in Fantastic Four: First Steps in 2025. Chris Evans will menace the Avengers as Kang in Avengers: The Kang Doomsday in 2026, followed by Robert Downey, Jr. as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
