Fans are already going wild for Wonder Man, the newest Marvel miniseries set to release in late January. The eight-episode streaming series will focus on Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who takes over the heroic mantle from Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

But not everyone is sold yet on Marvel’s casting choices. “Just like with Sam Wilson and Ironheart, they’re taking an established white hero and having them pass on their legacy to a different, black counterpart,” complained comics fan Jonathan Hyde. “Go woke, go broke, Marvel!”

“This problem of black characters taking over the mantle from white ones is often called the Black Mantle,” Hyde explained. “Hmm…’Black Mantle.’ That sounds like it could be a supervillain name too!”

When asked if he was aware that Gal Gadot is non-white, or that this instance of the supposed phenomenon involves a male hero replacing a female one, Hyde declined to comment.

Abdul-Mateen’s casting was announced after the decision that James Gunn’s rebooted DCU wouldn’t include Gadot in a third Wonder Woman film. Despite hopes that Netflix might restore the Snyderverse, ever-hopeful fans are still left waiting for Gadot. Studio executives chose instead to shift focus to a different character.

“Gal Gadot had to go. Doesn’t she support Israel?” said Gunn. “The real Wonder Woman would never side with innocent hostages against violent terrorists like that.”

Marvel has stated that racial and demographic concerns had little to do with their casting choice. “We really chose Abdul-Mateen because he previously played Doctor Manhattan–so he already has the ability to manipulate matter and turn his body into living energy,” said Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige. “Those are qualities we wanted for Wonder Man. And do you think we have the budget to reduplicate the nuclear accident that gave him those powers on some new actor? This was the cost-efficient choice.”

Some critics have questioned whether Abdul-Mateen might feel that wearing a woman’s leotard is immodest or inappropriate. The actor addressed these concerns in a press conference. “Hey, I played Doctor Manhattan, remember? I’ve worn less.”

Wonder Man premieres in January on DisneyPlus.
